Grand Cayman, British West Indies is indeed the "jewel of the Caribbean", boasting the highest standard of living of any Caribbean Island. Caymanians are unusually kind, courteous, religious people, who typically go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. A convenient, just over an hour flight from Florida, this island and its two smaller sister islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are uniquely centrally isolated by approximately 200 miles of open ocean from its closest neighbors, Jamaica, Cancun Mexico, and Cuba. Grand Cayman encompasses approximately 70 square miles, is about 22 miles long and 7 miles wide, and is surrounded by protective reefs. Grand Cayman's relatively small physical size allows for a very controllable social and economic environment. While having a population of only about 30,000, the Caymans harbor over 500 banks and 50,000 corporations, but few have actual physical facilities on the islands. More than 1,000,000 tourists visit the Cayman Islands every year; about 650,000 visit on cruise ships and another 350,000 are stayovers. There are currently about 5000 rooms available on the islands including all hotels and condominiums. Many celebrities and well-to-do make Seven Mile Beach their winter home. Condominiums along Seven Mile Beach range from $250,000 to $5,000,000 each. The little remaining shoreline land is currently selling for over $30,000 per foot. It is no surprise that Grand Cayman is being called "The Aspen of the Caribbean". The unique Cayman luxuries of no income taxes, no property taxes, no inheritance taxes and no capital gain taxes, help rank it as the fifth largest financial center in the world. There are more fax machines per capita in the Caymans than any other country in the world.
The islands have a rich pirate history due to their unique isolated location along
major shipping routes to Latin American trade centers. The Cayman's SCUBA diving and
snorkeling opportunities are unparalleled, rated in the top two in the world. You can
snorkel in waist deep water while hand feeding playful stingrays, tropical fish, and even
sea turtles, or dive along the Cayman wall leading to the mile deep Cayman trench. Over
300 shipwrecks make the area a treasure hunter's dream. In fact, a million dollar treasure
was even discovered in waist deep water by a snorkeling tourist, directly in front of the
Holiday Inn Resort! The Cayman's fascinating undersea world can be enjoyed by virtually
everyone, since a number of commercial submarine tours are available to take you 150 to
800 feet below the ocean's surface. Deep Sea sport fishing is another exceptional
Caymanian recreation due to the island's isolation and resulting abundance of fish. It is
considered one of the best fishing spots in the entire Caribbean Sea. Add to this an average air and water temperature of 80°F year round, pristine white
sand beaches awash with crystal clear "Cayman Blue" water, teaming with an
endless variety of friendly colorful tropical fish, sea turtles and stingrays, even close
to shore, and you have the stuff only dreams were made of, until now!
